Film Review

This version of the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald story has been beaten up for years. The main problem is that the screenwriter literally translated the book to the screenplay, resulting in some unnatural sounding dialouge. That said, the performances are as good as they can be given this handicap. As a lover of all things 1920s, I can say that the films strengths lie in it's flawless depiction of the jazz age. The award-winning costumes and music are spot on. This film feels like the 1920s like nothing else before or since. Mia Farrow is quite good as Daisy and Robert Redford hits just the right note as the title character. Scott Wilson really is terrific as Myrtle's husband. I saw this in the theater when it premiered and am looking forward to the new version coming out in the future.

"The Great Gatsby" had a famous ring to it, and was directed by Coppola, so I thought, hey, I should expand my film culture and watch this classic piece. After one hour of tolerating a terribly dragging and boring script, I went to IMDb to see what people were thinking of it. So it looks that it's made after a book… OK? So what? I sucks even without comparing it to an allegedly great book: * The key idea of the plot, that a rich girl won't marry a poor boy, is terribly outdated. Even "Look who's coming to dinner" is outdated. Great Gatsby might've been interesting 50 years ago. Now, it's pointless.* The history behind Gatsby and Daisy was not addressed at all before their meeting at Nick's house. That completely drains any emotion or significance from the scene.* Terribly annoying character for the rich girl (Mia Farrow). She also has no chemistry whatsoever with Gatsby.* Whoever liked this movie must love period flicks or love the 19…

After weighing in on the Boards about this terrific film, it's about time I posted a review, since I do have it on my Top-20 list! I love period-pieces, especially those set in the era of, say, 1918-1938. Hence, 'Eight Men Out', 'Great Gatsby', and 'Sting' are in my Top-20, and, of course, Redford appears in two of those. Redford had the required screen presence, and acting talent to play Gatsby. Those who criticize the film or Redford's interpretation are, to me, just over-analyzing or too caught up in comparisons with the fabulous novel by F. Scott. In addition to superb acting from Redford and a great ensemble cast, the costumes, music and fabulous sets/photography give this flick plenty to recommend.I have read the book a few times — I view it as a great American tragedy. But tragedies about larger-than-life characters are not so easy to reproduce on-screen. Anyway, maybe half the viewers haven't read the book; so, for a screenplay writer, it&#…
